About This Project

Book Cover Series

Concept: For this project, I had to choose four books that were not in a series, but could be released together because they shared a similar genre, author or theme. I decided on a sea beast theme and opted for four classic titles—Moby-Dick or, The WhaleJaws, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and The Old Man and the Sea.

Design:
After trying different approaches (photographic, illustrative and typographic), I felt these titles would be best represented with an illustrative approach. On the right-hand side of each book cover is a tear-off bookmark featuring the weapon used to attack each creature.

I illustrated all of the sea beasts myself. The vector images for the bookmarks are from a vector art website. I selected typefaces I thought would reflect a frightening, yet whimsical side to these sea monsters.

Back Cover Text Selection:
I wanted to keep each sea beast the primary focus of the cover. Since these titles are so well known, I did not feel the need to include an author biography section. I kept the synopsis very short and selected quotes from each book that echo the beast/supernatural element of the work or that speak to what it is like to be at sea.
